57th Krakow Film Festival for the youngest viewers

For several years, the section dedicated to the youngest cinema fans, Kids&Youth-cinema for the young – has been a constant element of the programme of Krakow Film Festival. This year, there is no lack of premières of feature films and cult animated films.

Krakow Film Festival is the oldest Polish film event, which since 1961 continuously popularises artistic cinema, both short and documentary films.  An important element of film education is the festival section addressed to the audience aged 4 to 15. The films, chosen by professional selectors, has been enjoying great popularity among the young film fans for years.

The special guest of this year’s edition of the festival is German cinema. It is thanks to this that there are productions from Poland’s western neighbour among the films offered to the youngest film enthusiasts. The film “Timm Thaler”  is a captivating story of the eponymous Timm, who enters into a mysterious contract, according to which he has to win every bet for the price of his sincere laughter. What he initially considers a gift, takes him away from his close ones and fills him with bitterness. Thankfully, real friends do not give up so easily.

Another German feature film in the section is “Tschick” (European Film Award – Young Audience Award), whose protagonist wants the prettiest girl in the class to like him, but he cannot get rid of the label of a school freak. Life gains momentum, when someone even stranger sits next to him at school. Someone who, in addition, does not care about being different. An adventure begins, an adventure from which the main protagonist would come back with bruises, but at the same time, more mature and self-confident. The film by Fatih Akin, the director of “Head-On” (the Golden Berlin Bear) and “The Edge of Heaven” (Palme d’Or for the Best Screenplay).

The film for pre-school children, prepared by Studio Animoon, is based on the classic book “Proszę mnie przytulić” (“Please hug me”) by Przemysław Wechterowicz and Emilia Dziubak (Wydawnictwo Ezop). The animated film “Hug Me” is a story, full of positive values, about Dad Bear and Son Bear, who decide to spend a particularly happy day. Maybe there would be a mess in the forest as a result. It is possible that something would fall or break. However, everyone will feel how important it is to be together.

This year’s winner of the Dragon of Dragons award, Witold Giersz, will present his legendary animated film “Proszę słonia.” The film tells the story of an extraordinary friendship between a boy called Pinio and a porcelain elephant Dominik. Dominik, thanks to the loving care of Pinio, comes to life, grows and after a short period of time, entangles his young guardian in unusual and surprisingly funny adventures.
