Wajda in documentary film

Krakow Film Festival celebrates the 90th birthday of the Master of the Cinema.

Each year, the programme of Krakow Film Festival abounds with many special events, made as a homage to outstanding artists. Also this year, apart from competition sections, there are many extraordinary events planned for the festival, among them, an amazing film review dedicated to the most outstanding Polish film-maker, Andrzej Wajda, who celebrates his 90th birthday this year.

Andrzej Wajda is a Great Master of the cinema, the unique artist and exceptional authority, the educator of new generations, the reliable friend of the festival, often the host of special events.
Andrzej Wajda is also a sensitive viewer and a perceptive reviewer, who has the beautiful need to communicate his impressions to the author live, immediately after the final credits. Andrzej Wajda is an art lover, connoisseur, an admirer of extraordinary talents. These are some of the Artist’s faces that we will show in our review.
And today, we wish our Master a beautiful portrait of Władysław Strzemiński in the current film ”Powidoki”. Ad multos annos!” Krzysztof Gierat, Director of Krakow Film Festival, felicitates the artist.

An unusual selection of the films, which will be shown at the 56th edition of the Festival, was made by Prof. Tadeusz Lubelski, a recognised film critic and theorist. The key to the selection was depicting Andrzej Wajda from various perspectives and different sides of the camera.

Within the frames of the first part of the review, “Wajda in someone else’s lens,” we will see the director working on the films “Everything for Sale” and “The Wedding” in two making-of productions: “Na planie” by Jerzy Ziarnik and “Pan… dziad z lirą” by Sławomir Idziak and Andrzej Kotkowski. The film “Cegła i inne nagrody filmowe” by Marek Brodzki will show the “behind the scenes” and circumstances of giving Wajda film awards, including the eponymous brick.

Another series, “Wajda the portraitist,” will show the most interesting documentary biographical films made by Andrzej Wajda, among others, the famous film “Wróblewski according to Wajda,”made last year, which presents the painter not only as an undisputed genius, but also as an important friend of the director’s.

The third part of the review are Wajda’s stories about himself. In the series “Autobiographical Wajda,” productions which sum up the film achievements of the director will be shown (“Kredyt i debet”), as well as the ones telling about the artist’s great successes in theatre (“Biesy po latach”) in which eminent actors from the Helena Modrzejewska National Stary Theater in Krakow participate and which uses unique archival materials, costumes and elements of stage designs of the legendary performance.
