“Andrzej Wajda’s Films in International Film Posters” exhibition will be presented for the first time in the National Museum in Krakow in frames of the 54th Krakow Film Festival, and it will take place between 25th May and 31st August 2014.
The exhibition constitutes a presentation of the work of one of the most important Polish film, theatre and TV directors. The work of Andrzej Wajda will be shown through posters to his films from around the world. The exhibition prepared by the Museum of Cinematography in Łódź was collected on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the director’s feature debut. The aim of the event is to popularise and remind the work of one of the most prominent and distinguished Polish filmmakers in the world. The exhibition is, therefore, a chance to present knowledge about the achievements of Polish cinematography, as well as to show younger artists the achievements of the great art of poster. Due to Andrzej Wajda’s enormous popularity, both in Poland and abroad, the Museum of Cinematography in Łódź managed to gather an outstanding collection of about 300 film posters. It is an extraordinary and unique collection for the first time gathered in one place – a collection of posters of exceptional quality published nationally and internationally. It includes unique copies, printed in very small amounts, from different parts of the world, such as Japan, Argentina, Germany, France, Finland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Italy. It proves a great popularity of the Polish director and his films worldwide.
The exhibition consists of works by prominent Polish graphics: Roman Cieślewicz, Wojciech Zamecznik, Wojciech Fangor, Franciszek Starowieyski, Wiktor Górka, Waldemar Świerzy, Jan Lenica – the creators of the Polish school of posters. The presented posters also include works by Wiesław Wałkuski, Jakub Erol, Cyprian Kościelniak, Andrzej Pągowski, Marek Freundenreich, Marcin Mroszczak, Rafal Olbiński and Rosław Szaybo.
The exhibition is accompanied by the Polish-English catalogue with over 300 pages presenting world achievements in the art of poster, and the views of the most important poster artists on Andrzej Wajda’s work. The graphical part of the publication is complemented by opinions of the most eminent authors of world cinema, people of art, culture and politics. The exhibition was made in cooperation with partners from Poland and from other countries. The partners of the project are: National Film Archive, Poster Museum in Warsaw, Kino RP, British Film Institute in London, Deutsche Kinemathek in Berlin, Deutsche Filminnstitut, Deutsche Filmmuseum in Frankfurt, Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science Margaret Herrick Library in Los Angeles, Filmová galanterie Terryho ponožky in Prague, Hungarian Film Archive, Cinematheque Francais in Paris and many private galleries dealing with collecting movie posters.
