DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION JURY
KLAUS EDER (Germany) – CHAIR
He studied German literature at Stuttgart University. He was an editor of the monthly film magazine “film” (1966-1968) and a film critic of the Bayerischer Rundfunk public radio. He curated a series of 30 films about Germany in the 1950s, which was presented at the New York Film Society of Lincoln Center, and a series of films by Helmut Käutner accompanied by a book published by the Goethe Institute. He is an author of many books, among others, on Andrzej Wajda, Luis Buñuel, Nikita Mikhalkov, Andrei Konchalovski and Im Kwon-taek. In 1986 – 2007 he worked as a programmer of the Munich IFF. Since 1987 he has served as General Secretary of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI).
KAROLINA BIELAWSKA (Poland)
Film director and screenwriter. She is a graduate of Film Directing of the Krzysztof Kieślowski Faculty of Radio and Television at the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Studio Prób feature film programme at the Wajda School in Warsaw. Her film studies and documentaries have been screened worldwide. She has won a number of film awards, which include the Golden Hobby Horse of the 50th Krakow Film Festival for Warsaw Available (together with Julia Ruszkiewicz, 2010), which was also nominated to Prix Europa in the category of the Best European Documentary, and the Golden Horn of the 55th Krakow Film Festival for her most recent picture, Call Me Marianna (2015).
HUSSAIN CURRIMBHOY (USA)
Programmer at the Sundance Film Festival since 2014, specialising in documentary feature films. He was previously the Director of Programming for the Sheffield Doc/Fest in the UK and has worked for the film festivals in Adelaide and Melbourne. After graduating from the Victorian College of Art in 2002, Hussain founded a touring short film festival and began collaboration with the Australian Centre for the Moving Image. He has a BA in Film from Curtin University, Western Australia, and has written and directed 8 short films, many of which have screened at film festivals around the world. He is based in Los Angeles, California.
AMIR LABAKI (Brazil)
Brazilian curator, film critic, filmmaker and playwright. He is the founder and director of It’s All True – International Documentary Film Festival organised in São Paulo. Labaki is the author of 13 books on history and cinema. 27 Scenes about Jorgen Leth (2009), his first feature documentary, was screened at many festivals, including CPH-DOX, Docudays (Liban), Jihlava IDFF, DocLisboa, Habana Film Festival, Festival do Rio and São Paulo International Film Festival (Brazil). The premiere of his first play, Lenya, took place in São Paulo in 2008.
MICHEL NOLL (France)
Documentary film director. Born in 1949 in Germany, he has lived in France for 40 years. After graduation from the University of Cologne he became a producer and director of television programmes and in 1982 he founded REVCOM TELEViSION, an independent television branch of the French publishing group Editions Mondiales, which has been successful on the international market. His production house, Quartier Latin Media (since 1987), has been specialising in programmes for children and documentary films. In 1995 he purchased ICTV, a distribution company. As the CEO of Quartier Latin Media he also manages Solferino, a film production company.
SHORT FILM COMPETITION JURY
EWA PUSZCZYŃSKA (Poland) – CHAIR
Born and raised in Łódź. Since 1995 she has been working for Opus Film, a film production studio, where she is a producer and the head of development. At the same time, she produces films at her own company, Extreme Emotions. She has taught at the Film School in Łódź and the Wajda School. She is an expert on training programmes for MAIA and SOFA and has recently joined the team of Script@Pitch at Torino Film Lab. Puszczyńska is the producer of Oscar-winning Ida (dir. P. Pawlikowski) and a member of the Polish Film Academy and the European Film Academy.
ENRICO VANNUCCI (Italy)
Short film advisor at the Venice Film Festival and member of the organising committee of ViaEmili@DocFest. In 2010 – 2014 he was director of Ozu Film Festival in Italy. He has also written essays on the short and feature film festival ecosystem. As a journalist, he has been covering major film festivals since 2009.
NANCY PHELPS (Belgium)
Journalist specialising in European animation film, producer of music for animation and advocate of the synthesis of both. Together with her husband, musician Niki Phelps, she founded Sprocket Ensemble, a group performing live music for contemporary animation. She has published, among others, in “Cartoon” and “Animation” and writes an animation blog for the Animation World Network. She is a member of the International Animated Film Society dedicated to the Art of Animation (ASIFA). She has served on jury panels at numerous international film festivals.
ALEKSANDRA MACIUSZEK (Poland)
Documentary film director and screenwriter. She is a graduate of Culture Studies at the Jagiellonian University and Film Directing at Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños in Cuba. She has worked for NGOs and culture institutions in Poland, Spain and Mexico. He graduation film Previous Scenes won the Silver Dragon (KFF 2013) and the best film award in First Steps section of Visions du Réel. Casa Blanca brought her two awards at the 55th KFF in 2016: the Golden Hobby Horse and the Silver Horn. She becomes involved in projects combining fiction, documentary and experimental anthropology.
BENJAMIN CLEARY (Ireland)
Irish screenwriter and director. In 2011 he completed a screenwriting MA at the London Film School. In 2015 he wrote, directed and edited his first short film Stutterer, starring Matthew Needham and Chloe Pirrie. The film has been accepted into 40 festivals and has won 12 major awards, including an Academy Award for Best Live Acton short film, an IFTA for Best Short Film and a UK Critics Circle Award. He wrote the script for the award-winning picture Love Is a Sting (dir. V. Gallagher, 2015)

MICHAEL LINDSAY-HOGG (USA) – CHAIR
Film, theatre and music video director, screenwriter, producer and painter. He could be called the Father of the Rock and Roll video, having directed the earliest ones of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who. He also did The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, The Beatles’ final film Let It Be, the award-winning Graceland: The African Concert’ with Paul Simon. His television and film credits include Tom Stoppard’s Professional Foul, Brideshead Revisited (BAFTA winner), Running Mates. The Object of Beauty, which he wrote and directed, won Best Director and Best Film at the Cairo International Film Festival. His memoir, “Luck and Circumstance&rdqu o; was published in 2011. His drawings and paintings have had 5 solo shows in the USA and one recently in London.
JOHANNES KLEIN (France)
Head of Programming at the In-Edit International Music Documentary Festivals who joined the team in 2007. In-Edit is the world’s biggest documentary film festival dedicated to music documentaries whose first edition was held in Barcelona 14 years ago and has since expanded across the globe, now taking place in Spain, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Greece. Since 2012, Johannes has worked for The Festival Agency in Paris, a market leading company that provides festivals around the world with high quality films.
ELIZABETH RADSHAW (Canada)
Industry Programmes Director at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto. Elizabeth Radshaw oversees the festival programmes supporting filmmakers, such as the Hot Docs Collection, Shaw Media-Hot Docs Funds, the Hot Docs-Blue Ice Group Documentary and the CrossCurrents Doc Fund. At Hot Docs she curates the conference, workshops and the Hot Docs Forum and Hot Docs Deal Maker, both unique pitching forum and work-in- progress meeting services that put filmmakers in front of financiers. Prior to this appointment, Elizabeth worked at TVF International and the National Film Board of Canada and also directed the Montreal premiere of the Rooftop Short Film Festival.
POLISH COMPETITION JURY
JOANNA KOS-KRAUZE – CHAIR
Film director and screenwriter. She has made television programmes and television theatre performances, documentary films and commercials. She is the co-director and co-author of such feature films as My Nikifor (2004), Saviour Square (2006) and Papusza (2013), among others, which received many awards at film festivals in Poland and abroad. In 2006, she was the recipient of the Golden Lions at the Polish film Festival in Gdynia as a co-director of Saviour Square. Currently, she is completing her work on a Polish-American film about genocide in Rwanda, Birds Sing in Kigali. She is a member of the Polish Film Academy and the European Film Academy.
AGNIESZKA GLIŃSKA
Film editor, member of the Polish Association of Editors (PSM) and the Polish Film Academy. She has received many awards for her editing of the films 11 Minutes (dir. J. Skolimowski) and The Here After (dir. M. von Horn) at the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, the 2016 Eagle Award for 11 Minutes and the Award of the President of the Polish Filmmakers Association for the best editing (A House on Its Head, dir. A. Palenta). In 2015 he was nominated for the Eagle Awards for Jeziorak. The films she works on win distinctions at prestigious festivals and three of them, All That I Love (dir. J. Borcuch), 11 Minutes and Difret (dir. Z. Berhane Mehari), have been short-listed for the Academy Award.
STEFAN LAUDYN
Director of the Warsaw Film Festival, founder and general manager of the Warsaw Film Foundation, founder of Warsaw Screenings, CentEast Market, and China-Eastern Europe Film Promotion Project. He was involved in the international promotion of films by, among others, Dorota Kędzierzawska, Jan Jakub Kolski, Małgorzata Szumowska, Piotr Trzaskalski, Wojtek Smarzowski, Andrzej Jakimowski, Marcin Wrona and Kasia Rosłaniec. He is a member of the European Film Academy and the Polish Film Academy. He is a Polish co-ordinator of the European Film Awards in Warsaw and a member of the jury of the Nipkow Programme. Guitar player and poet.
AGNIESZKA ZWIEFKA
For over 12 years she has collaborated with TVP as a creator of various award-winning TV programmes and short documentary forms. In 2007 she obtained her PhD in new media. In 2010 she established a company, Chilli Productions, specialising in creative documentaries. Her films include Albert Cinema (2013) and the musical documentary The Queen of Silence (2014), which was screened at over 40 festivals and broadcast by TV stations worldwide. She has won many international prizes for The Queen of Silence, including the Silver Horn at the 55th Krakow Film Festival, the Big Golden Nanook at Flahertiana IFF.
EWA SOBOLEWSKA
Producer, production director and editor of animation films. She is a graduate of Polish Philology and Theatre Studies of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Since 2001 she has been president of the TV Studio of Animated Films in Poznań where she has worked since 1981. In 2006 she became president of the AnimaFilm Foundation for CinematographicArt and Education. She is an executive producer and co-editor of the series of animated films for children Baśnie i bajki polskie and the series Miś Fantazy. She has curated film art exhibitions, worked as a festival jury member and prepared the film education programme for children and youth. She is an expert of the Polish Film Institute and a member of the Polish Filmmakers Association.
