“A Session” – a film project of Budka Suflera

A film project by Maciej Dejczer with Piotr Metz with the particpation of Krzysztof Cugowski, Romuald Lipko, Tomasz Zeliszewski.

On Thursday, the 29th May, a press meeting with members of the Budka Suflera band and a music journalist Piotr Metz will take place at the 54th Krakow Film Festival. A new documentary project under a working title “Session” will be announced during the meeting; it will be directed by Maciej Dejczer.
The meeting will be preceded by a concert of the Tolerancja band, who are the protagonists of a competition documentary Let Them Love, Let Them Dream; they will perform, among others, music by Budka Suflera.

In 2003, one of the most important Polish rock bands, Budka Suflera, who this year finishes its professional career after 40 years of activity, went to Los Angeles to make their life dream come true in the Village Recorders. In the studio where the best—from The Doors to John Lennon—made recordings, Budka Suflera produced in the same conditions as their idols and with the participation of world top musicians and producers.

Two songs to texts written by a famous writer, Jonathan Carroll, were produced by Greg Philinganes, a musician taking part in the production of, among other, the legendary “We Are the World” and the most popular album of all times—Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Miles Davis’s bass player Marcus Miller, Toto’s guitarist Steve Lukather and Prince’s percussionist Sheila E. were all present during the recordings. The studio was visited, among others, by Mariah Carey and Burt Bacharach who were recording at the same time. The entire session and stay in Los Angeles were documented on 32 hours of film, which has been gathering dust until today. Now, the production of a documentary based on this footage was undertaken by Maciej Dejczer, the director of a highly praised documentary about Budka Suflera’s visit to New York and their concert in the legendary Carnegie Hall (Budka Suflera w Nowym Jorku, 2000)

The film premiere is planed for the following year, for the 55th Krakow Film Festival, and the Festival takes the production under its patronage. ‘This year we opened the Festival with Niemen’s biography; it’s possible that the next year’s opening film will be a biography of Budka Suflera,’ says Festival Director Krzysztof Gierat.

The press meeting with the members of the group (Krzysztof Cugowski, Romuald Lipko and Tomasz Zaliszewski) will be conducted by a music journalist Piotr Metz, a co-author of the film script and the organizer of the recording session, which the film documents.

A concert of Tolerancja with the participation of Budka Suflera will take place at 4.30 PM, the 29th May, in Pauza in Garden (Małopolski Ogród Sztuki). The press meeting will begin after the concert at 5 PM (Pauza in Garden, MOS).
