Marta Savina, a debuting director, found the topic for her film in the Sicily of the 1960s, but it is still highly relevant today. It is based on a true story of a woman whose struggle became the symbol of women’s emancipation and the defence of women’s rights in the post-war Italy. “Matrimonio riparatore” – “a rehabilitating marriage” was quite common at that time. A victim could clear her name of “shame” by marrying her rapist. Franca Viola and her family were not going to accept this “custom”.
