The Polish Missionaries

Australia, Poland2019documentary75'Opowieści ze świata (2019)

They have abandoned safe and comfortable lives to preach the gospel and also provide real help. For a number of years, sister Davida and father Jan have been working in Papua New Guinea where poverty, diseases and lack of education hinder the development of the young state. Missionaries from Poland build roads, hospitals and schools there. The weakest of the islands inhabitants are among their charges, such as a girl accused of sorcery or AIDS patients. Although the eponymous protagonists struggle with numerous difficulties and have often experienced dangerous situations, faith and good humour help them to survive the most difficult moments.

Simon Target’s self made films take you to unfamiliar and often beautiful landscapes, revealing ordinary lives of unlikely heroes with raw honesty and care. THE POLISH MISSIONARIES (KFF 2019) showed villagers struggling against poverty and disease in remote Papua New Guinea. A TOWN CALLED BRZOSTEK uncovered forgotten stories of Jewish life in rural Poland. A graduate of Britain’s National Film School, Simon lives in Sydney with his Polish wife, doctor and author Beata Zatorska.
