In 1841 Edgar Allan Poe wrote ‘A Descent into the Maelstrom’ - a short story about one of the strongest ocean currents in the world. On the basis of it, in 1986 Philip Glass composed music which was performed live only once in Australia. Director Jan Vardøen decided to transfer the composition to the area to which the literary piece was dedicated – an archipelago in the Norwegian Sea. Performed by the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra, the music is accompanied by the photographs of the severe Northern landscape and harsh living conditions of the archipelago’s residents.
