The Gentle One
Poland1985animated12'Retrospektywa Piotra Dumały (2021)
Graphically impressive and full of psychological depth, the film is a vision of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s short story. It is a suggestive study of jealousy and hatred emphasised by the unconventional animation technique and the subtle music by Zygmunt Konieczny. These are not words but images and music that lead the narration of this poignant story. A Gentle Spirit was adapted for the screen by, among others, Robert Bresson (1969) and Mariusz Treliński (1995), but Piotr Dumała in his 11-minute animated adaptation seems to be the closest to the spirit of Dostoyevsky’s prose. Awarded in Mannheim, Zamość and Łagów, the film won the Bronze Hobby Horse and the Golden Dragon in Kraków (1985).
