The protagonist of Wojciech Szumowski’s film is Bogusław Popiela - a Polish white-water canoeist, four-time World Championship medallist, two-time European Champion. On this occasion, he plays a completely different role – the one of an activist restoring the memory of neglected Jewish cemeteries. The measure of success and meaning of Popiela’s actions is each recovered name and restored tombstone. The protagonist is captured wandering around necropolises of southern Poland. Individual stories make up a bigger project, ‘People, not numbers’, in which Holocaust victims are commemorated by name in cemeteries.
