An elderly woman Eliso lives in Chiatura, a desolate and run-down mining town in Georgia, famous for its manganese extraction. This time her working day will be different from the previous ones. Having heard on the radio that the miners’ strike has ended, she takes her gun and sets off on a private protest. To the great displeasure of the mine’s director, she disconnects the entire cable car system from the grid and barricades herself in her office. How will this clash of the individual with the big company and the entire community end? What are the motivations behind Eliso’s dramatic decision?

After two self-produced experimental short films, Memorybox (2014) and The Belt (2017), Toby Andris turned to more conventional narrative techniques for Chiatura (2021), shot in the Republic of Georgia with support from the G.R.E.C. in France, to great acclaim. His second Georgian film, Tskaltubo (2022), made with support from the Canada Arts Council, is currently in post-production.
