O, Collecting Eggs Despite the Times

Science may be a kind of organised madness. Entire fields of knowledge owe their existence to obsessed scientists, such as Max Schönwetter from Germany. His collection of almost 20 thousand bird eggs is invaluable for Oology. Their calciferous shells contain knowledge or memory about 4 thousand of different bird species. Zwier’s sophisticated documentary employing subtle irony along with seriousness tells us more than that and also asks the question whether passion, even a scientific one, can release a person from moral responsibility.

Pim Zwier

An independent filmmaker/media-artist who studied at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam between 2001 and 2003. His work consists of documentaries, video-installations and photographs, and is often inspired by, and/or based upon, archive material and collections. For his documentary films he has a preference to work with correspondences, diaries or autobiographies in which 'small history' has been recorded. These provide Zwier with the opportunity to link the abstraction of historical events to memories; a link which completes and nuances history, and provides new perspectives.
