‘Sometimes the most horrible things can be aesthetic’ – says Micha Bar-Am, a legendary photographer. His work was mostly a chronicle of 60 years of Israel’s history, in particular local ethnic tensions and armed conflicts during which he repeatedly looked death in the eye. Among others, he documented Eichmann’s trial and the Yom Kippur war, hence his awareness of the importance of photography in shaping the collective memory. Despite ubiquitous violence, he also captured moments in which life had triumphed. The artist tells us his story remaining outside the frame, while the film adopts the form of a collage of his iconic photos.
