Together with her husband and two children, Zdenka moves from the Czech Republic to Spitsbergen to carry out studies on social change occurring in the northernmost city on Earth – Longyearbyen. Life at the end of the world feels like a dangerous adventure – you need a rifle when you go for a walk and the endless landscape outside your window looks like a fantasy book illustration. But Spitsbergen is changing. A mine needs to be closed down because of climate change, while globalisation limits the freedom once enjoyed by the residents.

Veronika graduated in cultural studies from Charles University and screenwriting and dramatics from the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. She made a few TV documentaries before completing a feature-length debut entitled “Daniel’s World” premiered at the Berlinale festival in 2015. For several years Veronika headed the Ex Oriente Film Workshop at the Institute of Documentary Film and was employed as a curator and acquisition manager at DAFilms. She now cooperates with various documentary training schemes and media markets, and is working on her fictional debut “The Year of the Widow”.
