JUBILEE CYCLE OF 50TH KFF – PART VI – THE GREATS IN KRAKOW

In March 6th part of our jubilee cycle ‘The Greats in Krakow’ is coming to the cinemas in Malopolska.

In March, within the frames of anniversary screenings of 50th Krakow Film Festival, the sixth part of the cycle, called “The Greats in Krakow” will appear in the cinemas of Małopolska.

Starting from last October, we remind our audience of the most interesting films from our archives, organizing series of monthly screenings in cinemas of Krakow, Tarnow and Nowy Sacz. Each screening has its keynote, so far the viewers could watch the spicy “Krakow scandals”, successful “Prize-winners,” private ”Tales about man,” original “The cinema of imagination” as well as slightly forgotten in Poland cinema “Made in Yugoslavia.”

In March we turn to the famous names. In Krakow, such well-known filmmakers as: Krzysztof Kieślowski, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Zbigniew Rybczyński, Claude Lelouch or Jan Svěrák competed together. The celebrities among the jurors were never missing and the jury included, among others, Lindsay Anderson, Stanisław Lem, István Szabó, Bo Widerberg, Agnieszka Holland. The presence of such guests always added splendour to our event.

The festival director Krzysztof Gierat speaks about ”The greats in Krakow” screening, “Short-length feature film is usually the sphere of débutantes (in our screening – Roman Polański), but there are also film-makers, such as Mike Leigh and Kenneth Branagh, presented this month, who are faithful to this condensed film form also in the more mature phase of their careers. One always remains an animator (Jan Švankmajer), similarly with the documentary film-maker, but the winner of the Dragon of Dragons award, Werner Herzog is as good at this area of film art as at feature film.“

MAMMALS, dir. Roman Polański, Poland 1962, 10’ – the Golden Dragon 1963

The film features music by Krzysztof Komeda. It was fully financed by Wojciech Frykowski, later on murdered by the Manson’s gang in Polański’s villa. Just like the two men with the wardrobe from the earlier film, here two tramps traverse the snowy ranges, trying out diverse tricks to find themselves in the privileged position of the one seated on the sledge, instead of the one pulling it. .

LA SOUFRIÉRE (WAITING FOR THE CATASTROPHE ), dir. Werner Herzog, RFN 1977, 30’ – THE Honorary Diploma 1978

La Soufriére is an active volcano on Guadelupe, and the waiting for the catastrophe from the title is the full of tension waiting for the eruption. The desolate city, stray dogs and household animals, and a small film crew with Werner Herzog and his cameraman Edward Lachman on this endangered area, and also – strangely enough – some locals. One of them stayed behind to take care of the animals, another waits for death…

A SENSE OF HISTORY, dir. Mike Leigh, Great Britain 1992, 25’ – FIPRESCI award 1993

Very funny, very black and very wise! This is the commentary by one of the Internet fans of the works by the British mocker. On the screen, we can see documentary-like monodrama by Jim Broadbent, who reveals to us the the backstage of a series of macabre crimes in an aristocratic family.

LISTENING, dir. Kenneth Branagh, Great Britain 2002, 23’

A romantic story about people with a past, who search for consolation and spiritual renewal in a place where the strict rule of silence is in force. For two of them the music of Beethoven might be the language of love…

ZÁNIK DOMU USHERU (The Fall of the House of Usher), dir. Jan Švankmajer, Czechoslovakia 1981, 15’ – The Golden Dragon, FICC award 1982

The film, made using the stop motion technique, is a film adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s prose, considered a masterpiece of American Gothic literature. The cinema has reached to it since the silent era, and this story returned in subsequent filming. The narrator gets to a house, where strange and frightening events occur…
