Krakow Film Festival Maintains Prestigious Oscar® Qualification Status for Over 30 Years

Years upon years of experience and international recognition. The Krakow Film Festival has once again secured its place on the prestigious list of Oscar®-qualifying festivals. The festival maintains its qualification status for the Academy Awards® in both short film (fiction, animation, documentary) and documentary feature categories.

“We are tremendously pleased that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continues to recognise our festival, appreciating the extensive work and program choices we make. We take pride in offering films showcased and awarded at our festival a streamlined path to Oscar® nominations,” says Krzysztof Gierat, Director of the Krakow Film Festival.

Films seeking Oscar nominations must meet various criteria, including a seven-day consecutive theatrical run in Los Angeles. However, receiving awards at one of the Academy-approved qualifying festivals offers an alternative route. For more than three decades, Krakow Film Festival has successfully facilitated this pathway for award-winning international documentaries and short films.

Several films have received Oscar nominations through recognition at the Krakow Film Festival, including How Do You Measure a Year? (dir. Jay Rosenblatt), Of Fathers and Sons (dir. Talal Derki), and Wasp (dir. Andrea Arnold).

The Krakow Film Festival is on the exclusive list of qualifying events for the Oscars® in the categories of short film (live action, animated, documentary) and documentary feature, as well as a recommending event for the European Film Awards in the same categories.

The 65th Krakow Film Festival is scheduled to take place from 25 May to 1 June 2025 and online on KFF VOD from 30 May to 15 June.
