Who I Am Not
Romania, Canada2023documentary105'Międzynarodowy konkurs dokumentalny (2023)
Sharon was a finalist of the Miss South Africa beauty pageant, while Dimakatso is a well-known activist. What they share is intersexuality, i.e. they possess traits of both sexes. Meanwhile, the world requires them to unambiguously declare their identity, which is not always in line with their subjective feelings. In a subtle and no-nonsense way, the film explores the complex issue of intersexuality, never the same in every single case. It captures the protagonists in their everyday struggle with prejudice and shows the problems they encounter when confronted with common beliefs and local traditions. Despite everything, they do not lose hope. Will there be a place for them in society that is already so extremely divided?
