The opening film of the series Focus on Sweden within the frames of the 56.KFF.
Swedish cinema will be the special guest at the 56th Krakow Film Festival. The series begins with the screening of the film “The Swedish Theory of Love,” by the well-known, uncompromising Swedish-Italian documentary film-maker Erik Gandini. The screening with the participation of the director is held on May 30.
“The Swedish Theory of Love” is an attempt to confront the stereotypical, extremely idealistic perception of Sweden (and the Nordic countries in general). The director strives to examine this view, meticulously exploring the real nature of Swedish society.
“For many of us, Sweden is associated with paradise. However, this perfectly organised society, with its cult of individualism and independence, turns out to be a concentration of very lonely people,” says Anita Piotrowska, the selector of the documentary film section and a film critic. “The director of the documentary film “The Swedish Theory of Love,” Erik Gandini, is half-Swedish, half-Italian. This double perspective allows him to look at the contemporary Sweden in a slightly contradictory way. Together with such thinkers as Zygmunt Bauman, featuring in the film, he wonders why the inhabitants of the Swedish paradise have such a great problem with building deep interpersonal relationships. It is a fascinating film essay on the side-effects of social engineering.”
Erik Gandini, the director coming from Italy, living in Sweden for years, frequently awarded and appreciated at the most important international festivals, heavily involved in controversial socio-political subjects. The author famous for films such as: “Surplus. Terrorised Into Being Consumers” about consumer society, “Gitmo” about the prison at Guantanamo and “Videocracy,” where he reveals the mechanisms, according to which the Italian television functions.
